Your gut is filled with billions of bacteria that live symbiotically within your digestive system. This is your gut microbiome and it not only helps aid digestion, it supports your immune system and can even influence how you think and feel. It’s seriously amazing, which is why we include ingredients to boot your gut biome in every Thrive recipe box.
And there are plenty of things you can do to help give your gut biome a bit of a boost – here are our top 5:
- Diversify your diet
Eating a wide variety of different foods will keep your gut microbiome well-fed with nutrients allowing it to function at its absolute best and helping you feel seriously energised. If you’re up for a bit challenge, why not check out the Eat30 challenge, taken from the incredible book ‘How to have the energy’, which focuses on eating your way to better energy levels.
- Eat the rainbow
This is about eating as much different coloured fruit and veg as you possibly can. Why not see if you can eat the rainbow every day? There are lots of different bacteria in your microbiome and they all eat different foods. The wider the variety of foods you eat, the greater support you will give to your increasingly diverse biome.
- Chew your food
Healthy bacteria absolutely love properly chewed food. It helps them on their way to digesting your food efficiently and getting the absolute best from it. They say you should chew your food 30 – 40 times – why not give it a go?
- Fill up on fibre
Fibre is food for good bacteria. If you don’t get enough, it upsets the balance between good and bad bacteria and things start to go wrong. Get the right amount of fibre and you will be rewarded with a well-functioning gut biome and will soon start to reap the rewards
- Fermented is best
Kimchi. Kefir. Sauerkraut. Kombucha. These little fermented dishes are pure gold for your gut. The fermenting process kick starts the digestive process for your microbiome, allowing it to better break down the food and unlock even more goodness. Fermented foods are also naturally high in the probiotic bacteria found in your microbiome, so eating these delicious ingredients will help repopulate your microbiome with the bacteria it needs.
Because good food changes everything.
